Eric Kripke on GEN V’s Finale, Season 3 Plans, and All Those THE BOYS Cameos_1

Gen V season two expanded The Boys‘ overall universe in a major way, tying the shows together more than ever. From the big reveal about Thomas Godolkin and why he started God U to discovering that Sage has many, many plans for chaos, there’s so much going on. Marie Moreau’s powers are god-tier at this point. And a major team-up will take us right into The Boys’ fifth and final season. We caught up with the man, the legend behind this universe, Eric Kripke, to chat about the potential for Gen V season three, big deaths, and what all those The Boys cameos mean for the future.

Nerdist: Gen V season 2’s finale was so explosive and ended in this universe’s classic bloody fashion with the death of Thomas Godolkin and the birth of a new supe resistance team. What do both of these events mean for the future of the franchise as we move towards The Boys season 5?

Eric Kripke: Godolkin’s death felt like just desserts for a real asshole. I think what it means for the franchise is they needed extra mops that day. [laughs] Just get rid of that f**king guy… although he may make an appearance in Vought Rising. We’ll see. But, you know, I think the important bit is really setting up this notion that there’s this resistance. And it’s led by Starlight, and A-Train plays an important part, and the Gen V kids are getting drafted into it. And this notion that there’s this sort of underground, you know, fighting back against Homelander’s fascist government. It really sets the table in a good way for the war that you really dive into as The Boys Season 5 begins.

Absolutely. Speaking of Starlight and A-Train, Gen V season two has a lot of meaningful cameos from The Boys. Stan Edgar had a surprise one and we saw Sage as well. It’s hard to tell if Marie and her crew can trust them. Both of them seem duplicitous but also maybe they are a bit trustworthy. Where does Marie stand with them after the events of season two?

Kripke: Sage is… not to be trusted. Like, I’ll just say that. Like, Sage is just way too smart and way too Machiavellian. She still is, you know, as established now, the CEO of Vought, and Marie would do well to not trust Sage. I think Stan Edgar is a little more complicated. I think it’s the enemy of my enemy type of thing… he is angling to get himself back into Vought. His interests and [the Gen V crew] do align. And obviously, any opportunity you get to work with Giancarlo [Esposito], you jump on it! He classes our s**t up so much.

He’s awesome. Did Stan actually know that Cipher and Thomas Godolkin were one and the same? Or was he under the same impression that they were two separate entities?

Kripke: I think he was reacting to the information that he had, and I don’t think he realized that they were the same person.

Got it. We already know that The Boys season five will be the final season and the end of that series. But do you have plans for future seasons of Gen V? Or do you feel like Marie’s story will find a conclusion by the end of The Boys

Kripke: No, we’ve discussed it, and we have some great story ahead for Gen V that we would love to tell. It’s such a boring TV answer to give, but it’s gonna depend on the ratings. It’s gonna be up to the audience. How many people are tuning in, how many people are watching, is it enough to justify Amazon giving us a third season? So, you know, everyone tune in, tell your friends. We haven’t gotten an answer yet, and they’re keeping a close eye on the numbers, so…we’ll see. It’s up to the audience now.

Yes we need more! One thing I loved is that Marie and her sister Annabeth got a chance to have a reunion this season. We found out more about Annabeth’s life and that she’s a precog supe. Why did it feel vital to finally have that reunion happen this season? And what was the thought process behind making Annabeth a supe instead of just a regular person?

Kripke: Both of those ideas came directly from [showrunner] Michele Fazikas. I was only there to throw grenades and make her life miserable. [laughs] But, you know, Annabeth is and was such a core part of Marie. Finding Annabeth was really the only thing Marie ever wanted, and so there was only so long you could hold that off… Michele felt it was important to bring in her sister but have it be really complicated. And whenever you can bring in something like that, and it opens the door to a wider world and a bigger story, then that’s always great… In terms of her being a supe, it helped tell this really complicated story that Annabeth is really angry at her sister, but really, she’s angry at herself.

And she’s transferring all of these bad feelings towards Marie, when really it’s about blaming herself for not telling her parents what she was dreaming. For both of them, for as much bad water has been under the bridge, they’re both actually really in very similar places. It was a good way to sort of strip away the surface level of tension and show that they really are sisters, in every sense of the word.

I can’t wait to see what’s coming up for them in the future as they fight with the resistance!
