FACE/OFF Sequel Loses Director Adam Wingard Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

Thirty years ago, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage were at the peak of their box office powers, starring in one hit movie after another. One of those they actually starred in together was John Woo’s Face/Off in 1997. The film featured an FBI Agent (Travolta) “switching faces” with a terrorist (Cage) in an experimental procedure. Of course, wackiness and scenery chewing ensue. A few years back, news of a Face/Off sequel emerged, with Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard attached to direct. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, Wingard has now dropped out of the project, and Paramount is now looking for a new director.

In 2019, Paramount hired Oren Uziel, screenwriter for 22 Jump Street, to write the screenplay for the Face/Off sequel. However, that version never happened, and Uziel went on to other projects. He’s currently showrunning Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage. In 2021, the studio hired Wingard to direct Face/Off 2 from a screenplay that he was writing with Simon Barrett. In a 2024 interview, Wingard said, “I don’t want to get too much into the weeds on the Face/Off thing. But yeah, I think the script is really f****** awesome. It is one of those things where you read it, and you’re like, ‘Oh, shit! This is a true sequel to Face/Off that I could have never dreamed of.”

Whatever Wingard’s vision for a Face/Off sequel was, it seems Paramount just wasn’t on board. After five years, it seems the studio is back at square one with this project. We’re not sure how they planned to undo the death of one of the lead characters. But in Hollywood movies like these, anything can happen. A Face/Off sequel does seem like a movie whose time has come and gone, however. Despite the original being a hit, we’re not sure the nostalgia for it is strong enough to carry an expensive legacy sequel. It may still happen, but we wouldn’t be shocked if Face/Off 2 remains in development hell forever.
