Fallout season one’s ending had us breathless. It was the perfect symphony of every character coming together to unravel a tangled, multi-layered plot that had us at the edge of our seats. Fallout season two’s ending, meanwhile, was just as incredible in a completely different way, as we evolved from symphony to the most incredible rock concert one could attend. Fallout season two’s ending was full of character development, reveals, surprises, suspense, and pure excitement that had our heads turning this way and that. It literally left us staring at our screens in awe until the very last minute.

Fallout season one’s ending brought us to one specific place to experience its crescendo altogether. But Fallout season two’s ending was comprised of many different crescendos, one for each of our major characters and a few more for good measure. To help you parse Fallout season two’s many endings, and where they left our favorite characters (and some we love to hate), dive into our Fallout season two ending, explained piece, and let us guide you through.

Lucy and Hank MacLean’s Fallout Season 2 Ending, Explained
Hank Has Set the Enclave’s Plans Into Motion

Hank MacLean has been up to no good on Fallout. After finding his way into Vault-Tec’s New Vegas Vault, he spent the whole season creating a mind-control chip that brainwashes anyone he implants into becoming his version of a “good person,” someone kind and unassuming who will do as they’re told. Of course, we learn Hank isn’t just working for Vault-Tec. The vault he’s set up camp in is actually run by Vault-Tec’s investors, The Enclave. And on their orders, Hank has miniaturized the brain-computer interface implant chip so that it is virtually undetectable. In the ending of Fallout season two, we learn Hank has sent his minions into the Wasteland to carry out the Enclave’s orders before Lucy was able to find him… which are not yet clear to us.
Lucy Implants Her Father with His Mind-Control Device

In Lucy’s Fallout season two ending, Hank tries to implant her with his brain-control device, but she narrowly escapes thanks The Ghoul’s intervention. The Ghoul leaves Lucy with a gun and a decision. How will she bring her father to justice? In the end, Lucy gives Hank MacLean a taste of his own medicine, implanting him with the brain-computer implant chip and telling him that she’s going to “turn him into the father she thought he was.”
Hank Loses All His Memories and Lucy and Maximus Reunite
Alas, Hank MacLean doesn’t want to be brought to justice. And his work with the Enclave is more important to him than his love for his daughter. Hank turns the dial that controls the brain-control device all the way to maximum power and erases all his memories. He is still alive, but he doesn’t remember what he was doing and isn’t able to tell Lucy or anyone else. Hank also no longer recognizes Lucy at all.
But although things seem dire and Lucy believes she has started a war by not allowing her father to intervene against Caesar’s Legion, Lucy does have one bright spot in her Fallout season two ending. She reunites with Maximus and the two share an embrace.
Maximus’ Ending Explained
Most of Maximus’ Fallout season two ending is spent fighting the army of Deathclaws descending upon him. But Maximus, being a truly good person, does not give up the fight. Even when his armor is destroyed, he leaves it behind and stands up with only a roulette table wheel and a pool cue to fight against the ferocious creatures attacking him. Although Thaddeus, bless him, tries to help, it is truly the NCR that saves Maximus. Led by the woman that The Ghoul helped save in the hills of Nevada, the NCR has risen again enforce. They take out the Deathclaws and hopefully stir some hope among the people.

At the very end of Maximus’ season two story, he finally reunites with Lucy. But their embrace is cut short as they see Caesar’s Legion, led by Macualy Culkin’s newly anointed Caesar, marching on New Vegas. Looks like a proper war between the Legion and the NCR is about to finally hit the strip.
The Ghoul’s Fallout Season 2 Ending, Explained
The Ghoul technically has two Fallout season two endings, Cooper Howard’s ending and The Ghoul’s ending. Let’s talk about The Ghoul first. In Fallout season two’s finale, The Ghoul is finally as close to his family as he’s ever been. With the help of Mr. House, he’s guided through the Vault-Tec New Vegas Vault for Management toward the cryogenic chambers where his family has been kept all this time. On the way, he pauses to save Lucy MacLean from Hank, finally shooting for the butt to allow Lucy to make the final choice about Hank’s fate. We’ll have to see what the future holds for this pair.

When he finally comes to his wife and daughter’s cryogenic pods, he has Mr. House open Barb and Janey’s chambers. But alas, they are empty. The Ghoul does not reunite with his family in this Fallout season two ending, but he does finally have hope that they are still alive. Barb has left him a postcard that reads “Greetings from Colorado” on one side and, on the other, she’s left a note that says, “Colorado was a good idea.” This references Cooper Howard’s ending in the past timeline.

Cooper Howard’s Fallout Season 2 Ending
In the past timeline, Cooper Howard’s ending goes a little less well. Although he thinks he’s saved the world by doing the right thing and giving the president the Cold Fusion diode… The president is really working for the Enclave. Now that the Enclave knows that Cooper Howard is too aware of their plans and machinations, especially involving nuclear war, they want him out of the way. Cooper Howard is arrested for “un-American activities.” Yikes!

In Cooper Howard’s Fallout season two ending, we also get the setup for Colorado being our next new Fallout location. Barb jokes to Coop they need to get far away from everything… Maybe to Colorado.
Other Fallout Season 2 Endings, Explained
Mr. House’s Ending, Explained

Oh, Mr. House, old chum. We loved Mr. House in the Fallout season two finale. He really was just having a jolly old time, annoying Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, thrilled to have a voice to chatter on with again. Mr. House clued us into the Enclave’s true villainy and that Hank MacLean was one of their “acolytes.” he also led Cooper Howard to his family’s cryogenic vaults. We got the sense there was more to the history between the pair than we’ve seen so far. Ultimately, The Ghoul left Mr. House in a Pip Boy on the floor of Vault-Tec’s New Vegas Vault, but we see Mr. House blip into existence back on his screen in Lucky 38, indicating more to come from him. Most importantly, Mr. House is the character who concludes season two with the Cold Fusion diode in his possession. What will he do with it? Hopefully, the right thing. Short of that, we hope he can engineer himself a Justin Theroux-shaped body.
In the past timeline, we don’t see Mr. House again, but he does take the time to call Cooper Howard and warn him of his coming arrest. He also wants Coop to know he wasn’t responsible for it. Here’s to more of Mr. House and Cooper Howard in Fallout season three.
Steph Harper’s Fallout Season 2 Ending, Explained

Overseer Steph is in a pickle in her Fallout season two ending. The Vault has found out she’s from the past and GASP Canadian, and they’ve turned on her. Outraged, she unleashes the full might of her fury and contacts the Enclave via the Pip Boy that was in Hank MacLean’s keepsake trunk. She tells the Enclave to initiate Phase 2, and they do. We feel like the FEV is COMING for the residents of Vaults 32 and 33. Oh yeah, and Steph and Hank are married, by the way.
Norm’s Ending, Explained
Norm gets touched by the Wasteland in his Fallout season two ending. Buds’ Buds try to kill him and accidentally unleash a swarm of bloodthirsty radroaches. At first, Ronnie and the others won’t let Norm into a safe room, even though he tries to help save their lives and he thinks he’s a goner. But then Norm’s survival instincts kick in, and he locks the roaches in with them instead… Even though his friend Claudia is inside. He does eventually save Claudia, though, and drags her toward what we assume is Vault 33. Too bad nothing good is waiting for Norm there.
Caesar’s Legion’s Fallout Season 2 Ending, Explained

The Legion is busily fighting one another in the Fallout season two finale. In the chaos, Macualy Culkin’s character is finally able to unearth the note hidden in Edward Sallow’s pocket, the one that confirms who his heir should be. Of course, the original founder of Caesar’s Legion basically says that without him, there wouldn’t be a Caesar. The note in Sallow’s pocket reads, “I am Caesar, I am Legion. It ends with me.” Culkin’s character doesn’t like that, so he swallows the note, kills any witnesses, and declares himself Caesar. He declares that the Legion will conquer the Holy Land of Vegas. At the end of Fallout season two, we see the Legion marching toward New Vegas to do exactly this.
The Brotherhood’s Ending, Explained

The Brotherhood last appeared on Fallout season two, episode five. But it makes one more appearance in Fallout season two’s ending… Literally in its last, post-credits scene. In this Fallout post-credits scene, we see that Elder Quintus has shed his “Unifier” guise and now intends to be Quintus the Destroyer. He’s got his hands on plans to build a dangerous weapon, Liberty Prime Alpha. And you can read all about it right here.
Where Fallout Season 2’s Ending Leaves the Plot

So, where does Fallout season two’s ending leave the plot? Well, in broad strokes. First, we have The Ghoul heading toward Colorado where his family might be… but could something else be in Colorado as well, perhaps the Enclave’s current headquarters? Next, we have the Legion and the NCR heading for a major clash. We’ve never seen the enemy factions face off on the strip proper, so that’s absolutely in the cards. After that, there’s the threat of the Forced Evolutionary Virus appearing back into the Wasteland in a whole new way. And finally, of course, there’s Hank MacLean’s Enclave Acolytes and whatever orders they are carrying. Phew! A jam-packed ending if there ever was one.
Fallout season two is now streaming on Prime Video.
