FALLOUT’s Justin Theroux Thinks Mr. House Based Victor on Cooper Howard Rotem Rusak | usagoldmines.com

In Fallout season two, Mr. House tells Cooper Howard that he doesn’t like fiction because it’s “not real.” And assures him that he isn’t a “crazed fan of one of his films.” But Robert House then also confessed to basically stalking Cooper Howard for a decade, so we feel he might protest a little too much. And this feeling is underscored by one of the special Securitrons introduced into the world of the Fallout series, Victor. Victor the Securitron is a beloved fixture from Fallout: New Vegas. And while we know Victor draws inspiration from Vegas Vic in the real-world context of Fallout‘s creation, when juxtaposed against the kind, cowboy roles Cooper Howard is known for within the series, we start to see a resemblance emerge. Could Robert House have drawn on Cooper Howard as an inspiration for Fallout‘s Victor the Securitron? Justin Theroux, who plays Mr. House in Fallout season two, thinks that could very likely be the case.

Now that we know that Cooper Howard is a fixture of Mr. House’s world in Fallout, it seems too coincidental for Victor the Securitron to also just happen to be a cowboy. And when we asked Justin Theroux whether he felt Fallout‘s Victor the Securitron might be based on Cooper Howard’s turns as iconic cowboys, Theroux said, “I think so.” And then proceeded to blow up Robert House’s spot, adding, “This is what makes me think that House is a movie fan or a movie buff, and I think his whole world… He definitely has a performative element to him. So I think Victor, he had to model him after something.”

And then Theroux added that Mr. House’s interest in Cooper Howard might go even beyond creating a robot in his image, noting, “I have a theory that House really wants to be Cooper Howard in a way or fancies himself a different version or a Clark Gable or something like that. So I think he pays attention to popular culture. He just doesn’t understand it at all.”

Honestly, we love that. In a sense, if Victor the Securitron really is based on Cooper Howard, as we at Nerdist and Justin Theroux speculate, then there’s a real twistedly sweet narrative that emerges. Before Robert House finally introduced himself to Cooper Howard in Fallout season two, he’d basically been living in seclusion, allowing his double, known to fans as Bobby Apartment, to handle all his dealings in the world. Under those circumstances, Mr. House’s most sentient robot, Victor, starts to look a little like Robert House’s only friend. But now, Robert House doesn’t just have the robot version of Cooper Howard in Victor the Securitron; he has the real thing.

Theroux tells us that, perhaps, Cooper Howard is the closest thing Mr. House has to a friend on Fallout. Noting “I’d like to think that,” when we ask if Robert House and Coop/The Ghoul actually have a friendship happening. “They did go on a little bit of a road trip at the end.” Ultimately, Theroux isn’t sure if Mr. House of the Wasteland is able to feel feelings, but he hopes he does. “If he’s just an algorithm, then that’s boring. So I’d like to think that even then, meaning now, meaning the future, that the technology had sort of evolved so that he could feel [emotion].”

So ultimately, did Robert House build himself Victor, a sentient cowboy robot, because he kind of wanted to be Cooper Howard’s friend on Fallout? Maybe that’s too soft for Mr. House. He probably wouldn’t think of it that way himself. But looking at the way everything has unfolded on the show, it kind of feels like that’s a little bit the case. So we’ll think of it like that for him.

We’ll have to wait and see what Fallout season two has in store for Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, Mr. House, and hopefully, Victor the Securitron. Showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet tells us she thinks there’s more to explore between Cooper Howard and Robert House in the future of the Fallout show, noting, “I think they have a real history that we’re excited to unearth more of. I think House is deeply fascinated by Coop. And that he can’t quite understand why his algorithm keeps telling him that this figure is so important. And Coop has done a big move that confirms that this season, but is there even more to it? So, we’re excited to keep exploring those two. And I think they’re amazing on screen together, Walton and Justin have such a hilarious, incredible dynamic.”

Maybe, a part of that future will include confirmation that Robert House based Victor the Securitron on Cooper Howard. Maybe it will even include friendship.

Fallout season two is now streaming on Prime Video.
