One of the things that has fans most excited about Marvel Studios’ upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is the return, and likely last hurrah, of the original cinematic X-Men. Many of the classic 2000s-era cast members are coming back, as announced this past spring. But one notable name not included is Famke Janssen as mutant telepath Jean Grey. Via an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the former X-Man said no one at Marvel Studios has contacted her about it at all. And it doesn’t sound like the classic coy Marvel actor misdirect either. Here’s what she had to say:
Every time I do an interview, it’s mentioned. It’s interesting. I didn’t realize that was such a big part. Every interview I do, that will come up, and of everything I say, that is going to be the only thing that’s gonna be printed. I should be flattered, I suppose, that this character has resonated with people. It’s been so long, but it’s nice that people are still talking about her. I’m sure every single time there’s a new movie that they’re doing… it’ll come up again.
When asked if Marvel ever asked her to reprise Jean after that Fox era of movies, the actress replied, “Never. Never ever.”
So far, the only returning female cast member from the original X-Men movies is Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. But as for the other three main X-Men women, Anna Paquin (Rogue), Halle Berry (Storm), and Famke Janssen? Apparently, none of them is in the film. If Doomsday is indeed the final bow for the original X-Men, it seems odd that the ladies have all been sidelined. The only reason we can think of is that Jean is extremely powerful. Especially in her Phoenix form. So the Russo brothers might not have wanted such an OP member on the team. But with Professor X and Magneto coming back, another two OP characters, this really feels like bias against the X-Women. That deflates a bit of our excitement over the big mutant reunion coming up in Doomsday.
