Star Wars is an ever-present franchise, with new movies and TV shows constantly flowing from Lucasfilm. But it wasn’t always like this. From 1984 to 1991, Star Wars was in deep hibernation, while George Lucas figured out what to do next. The ice began to thaw on the Star Wars galaxy in 1991, with the publication of the novel Heir to the Empire and Dark Horse Comics‘ Dark Empire mini-series. Both took place years after the OT, and fans ate up these long-awaited returns to the galaxy far, far away. One fan on YouTube by the name SpikeyTortoise Animations spent years animating the Dark Empire comic, now considered Legends material, and you can see the incredible result in the video below:
The original Dark Empire comic was written by Tom Veitch and gorgeously illustrated by Cam Kennedy. It picked up the story six years after Return of the Jedi. Published from December 1991 to October 1992, Dark Empire ended up being a huge inspiration for the sequel trilogy. In this comic, Palpatine returns as a clone of himself on a secret and hidden Sith world. He seeks to control the Jedi offspring of Leia Organa and Han Solo, to ensure his survival beyond death. He then gathers up the remaining Imperial forces left over from Grand Admiral Thrawn’s attempt at restoring the Empire. Sound familiar? If you hate “Somehow, Palpatine returned” in The Rise of Skywalker, you have Dark Empire to blame.

One very cool aspect of this fan-made animation is that the style mimics that of Nelvana Ltd. animation. That is the same company that produced the animated segment of the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. Not to mention the ’80s Droids and Ewoks Saturday morning cartoons. SpikeyTortoise used the audio from the 1994 audiobook adaptation of the comic, featuring Billy Dee Williams as Lando. So it has the extra layer of authenticity. The animation took a very long time for this 28-minute film, made in TVPaint, Maya3D, and the Adobe software suite. So no AI used here, folks. This took time and effort. Should SpikeyTortoise do Dark Empire II and Empire’s End, the sequel comics, we’d be here for it.
