With the incredible success of 2019’s Parasite, South Korea’s Bong Joon Ho made the larger cinema world sit up and take notice. But the filmmaker’s been of interest to genre fans for years. Myself, I first saw his giant monster movie/ecological and social commentary The Host back in college. Snowpiercer, Okja, Mickey 17…Bong is no stranger to different ways to tell stories. Add to his list, “animated movie.” Today we learned about Ally, the first animated film from Bong Joon Ho, and got a first look at the film’s main character, a truly adorable piglet squid.

The movie definitely sounds delightful, as the official synopsis lays out:
At the heart of the story lies Ally, a curious and endearing piglet squid living in the uncharted depths of the South Pacific Ocean. She dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary. But when a mysterious aircraft sinks into the ocean, her peaceful world is suddenly thrown into danger. Alongside her colorful and loyal — yet unlikely — companions, Ally is thrust into an extraordinary journey that will take her all the way to the surface. Inspired by remarkable real-life marine creatures, the film explores themes of friendship and courage, as encounters between humans and the creatures of the deep reshape both worlds. Set against visually stunning underwater worlds and epic action sequences, the film is a family adventure blending humour and emotion.
The movie won’t come out until the first part of 2027, according to the release. This makes sense since we don’t even have a trailer yet, just a very pretty image of Ally herself. Bong co-wrote the script with Jason Yu in addition to directing. Bong’s movies have generally been pretty dark, so it’ll be interesting to see him handle a “family adventure.” When his previous cutest movie is Okja, which has some really messed up crap in it, I imagine we’ll still see a bit of darkness. Either way, if Bong is selling, I’m buying.
