Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and animated sensation KPop Demon Hunters are two of Netflix’s most acclaimed and highest streamed films of 2025. With a combined total of eleven nominations, the pair are gaining speed in this year’s Oscar’s race. As such, both have been named to the Criterion Collection, a spotlight of cinema from around the world.

Although Frankenstein and KPop Demon Hunters are on two entirely different sides of the coin tonally, the pair both stuck the landing with their respective audiences. Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro’s retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic gothic masterpiece, clinched nine nominations for this year’s Oscars. That includes for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Suporting Actor for Jacob Elordi’s captivating portrayal of The Creature. The story explores the complexities of human nature and cautions against the dangers of playing God.
It follows Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who’s discovered the secret to human creation. His creation, however, is not up to the standards he envisioned. Frankenstein had a simultaneous theatrical and Netflix release, boasting just short of 30 million views within its first three days.
An overnight global hit, KPop Demon Hunters stands tall as Netflix’s most streamed movie of all time. Currently, the film holds more than 500 million views on the streaming platform. KPop Demon Hunters has already claimed the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Song for “Golden.” It’s up for those same two categories again at the Oscars, competing against Zootopia 2 for Best Animated Feature Film.

Rewarding their achievements, both films have been added to the Criterion Collection. The Criterion Collection publishes classic and contemporary films from around the world, coupled with exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes looks. Previous Netflix films named to the collection include Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. A number of del Toro’s previous films are already in the Criterion Collection. Those include recent Oscar winners Nightmare Alley, Pinocchio, and The Shape of Water.
