Jason Momoa has been very excited to play Lobo in the DCU. Even before James Gunn had announced any other character or actor, according to the top man, Momoa has caped for playing the Main Man. Lobo will appear in this summer’s Supergirl, of course, but we only got a brief, fleeting glimpse of him in the first trailer. That changed on Friday with a new 30-second teaser for Supergirl entitled “Blast Off” which gives us a better look at the intergalactic bounty hunter.
The teaser is mostly a condensed version of what we saw in the longer trailer, with the exception of a few new shots of Lobo. We see a closeup image and bit of Lobo, with his cigar, driving his trademark space motorcycle with a chained hook creating havoc among people in whatever craphole, Coruscant-ass dive neighborhood it is. We also get a quick moment of Supergirl saying that he’s “such a d***,” which is the prevailing feeling about the character in the comics.
The pros here include a pretty comic accurate makeup and costume. Momoa also clearly has the vibes of Lobo down pat. In fact, he had the Lobo vibes in his portrayal of Aquaman, too. The cons are entirely based on the way this looks which is, at the moment, the kind of oversaturated digital lighting that makes everything yellow. I mean, it doesn’t NOT look like the final sequence of Joss Whedon’s Justice League. I also just don’t really get a big screen movie feel from these shots. Even Momoa’s look himself feels pretty much just like the level of costuming we got on Syfy’s Krypton.
Now, obviously this is just a teaser and the movie won’t come out for a few more months. We have barely seen anything of Lobo to this point. This seems to indicate that section was either filmed later than the the rest or at least finished later. We also have reason to believe Lobo will be a featured cameo rather than a main (ha) character. So, benefit of the doubt and all that. It might look better in the finished film. As of right now, not really doing it for me, but your mileage may vary.
Supergirl hits theaters June 26, 2026.
