The 1987 horror/comedy classic The Lost Boys is the latest vampire movie to get the Broadway musical treatment. Producers announced last year to much fanfare that it was soon coming to the stage. And now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our first look at the cast members playing lead Michael Emerson, gang leader of the vampires, David, and the girl they’re fighting over, Star. Ali Louis Bourzgui is filling in the fashionable boots of Kiefer Sutherland as David, with LJ Benet in the lead role of Michael, the role once played by Jason Patric, and Maria Wirries takes on Jami Gertz’s role of Star.
In the musical version of The Lost Boys, it appears that much of the basic premise of the movie remains. It seems the big alteration is that Santa Carla’s vampires are now a rock band, and not a biker gang. (How very Lestat of them). In a statement, Ali Louis Bourzgui said, “It’s a perfect combo of sexy vampire glam rock with a heart-centered story about family and rising above oppression.” The fact that he said “glam rock band” suggests this will remain in an ’80s time period. The rest of the cast includes all the other characters you remember from the Joel Schumacher ’80s classic. Former Elphaba in Wicked, Shoshana Bean, portrays single mom Lucy Emerson, famously played by Dianne Wiest. Benjamin Pajak takes on the role of Michael’s kid brother, Sam, portrayed originally by the late Cory Haim. Paul Alexander Nolan plays a local video store owner with a secret, Max. Jennifer Duka and Miguel Gil play the vampire-hunting Frog Brothers. And Brian Flores, Sean Grandillo, and Dean Maupin round out the rest of the titular lost boys. No word yet on who is playing the sweaty and shirtless saxophone player from the Santa Carla boardwalk. He’s going to be there, right? Hopefully, The Lost Boys fare better than other vampire musicals of the past several years, which all flopped.
