Gillian Anderson Talked to Ryan Coogler About THE X-FILES Reboot (And Maybe Scully’s Return) Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

After the massive success of his horror movie Sinners, everyone is wondering what director Ryan Coogler is going to tackle next. Although a third Black Panther film is in the cards, that doesn’t seem to be what’s next for him. While promoting Sinners, he’s confirmed he’s starting work on his much-anticipated reboot of The X-Files soon. And now, while appearing on ITV1’s This Morning (via Deadline), Gillian Anderson, who played FBI Agent Dana Scully for 11 seasons, has confirmed that the Creed director has spoken to her about it, and teases that she might be open to returning in some capacity. Here’s what she had to say:

I spoke to him, and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person and best of luck, call me. At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good, and it feels like the right time — perhaps.

The X-Files dominated pop culture in the ’90s, with David Duchovny and Anderson on the cover of every magazine for years. Chris Carter’s original show ran 9 seasons, from 1993-2002. Fourteen years later, Fox did two more seasons, one in 2016, and one in 2018. After the last one, Anderson publicly said she didn’t like the direction the final season took her character, and said that would be the last time she would play Scully. But with Coogler now in charge, she seems to be warming up to the idea again.

We know almost nothing about this new X-Files that Ryan Coogler is cooking up. But assuming that Gillian Anderson is even considering a return as Scully, it likely means this isn’t a reboot in the strictest sense. It will probably take place within the same continuity as the original show and movies. We don’t expect Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Scully to be the main characters anymore. Especially as Coogler has stated he wants a more diverse main cast.

But it seems it’s going to be a continuation, and not a remake. We’ll likely have new FBI agents in pursuit of the paranormal and unusual. And we honestly can’t wait.
