Grant Gustin Wants to Play the Flash in the New DCU (And Here’s How It Could Work) Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

The new DCU is officially off to the races with James Gunn’s new Superman film. And fans are, of course, already wondering which classic DC Comics heroes are going to populate this new universe. At the recent FAN EXPO Denver, Grant Gustin was on hand for a special Q&A. Via ScreenRant, we learned that at the panel, a fan asked Gustin, “If James Gunn cast you in his DCU, who would you want to play?” which led to the DC TV star answering very quickly by saying “Flash.”

Now, you’re probably asking, how could this even work? The CW’s Arrowverse is over, and it had a good, long run. Six shows that ran for several seasons are nothing to sneeze at. And whatever form DC’s Scarlet Speedster takes in Gunn’s DCU, it will almost certainly be a new actor, even though Gunn often praises Gustin’s take on the character. But what if there’s a way to have both? The answer to that lies in DC Comics’ long history.

Between nine seasons of CW’s The Flash and three appearances in the DCU, the Barry Allen version of the Flash is pretty played out. But the new DCU does need a Flash in it. He’s too important to the greater DC Comics mythology for DC Studios to go without a Flash. But the DCU Flash should be Wally West, not Barry. However, Wally’s existence is predicated on Barry Allen having been the Flash before him, and his growing up as his crime-fighting partner, Kid Flash. When Barry dies heroically, Wally takes up the mantle and becomes the new Flash as a young twenty-something.

We doubt that, after the 2023 Flash movie tanked at the box office, DC Studios is in a rush to make another one so soon. But Flash as a property has already proven itself to work on TV, so maybe an HBO Max series for the DCU Flash, who would now be Wally, would work. It’s the same approach DC Studios took to the Green Lantern franchise, since it might be tough to sell moviegoers on another Green Lantern film after the 2011 Ryan Reynolds debacle. And all signs point to the eventual DCU Justice League being based on the animated version. In that, Wally West was the team’s resident Flash.

So if Wally is the new Flash, that means Barry has to exist in this universe. And why not, since this DCU has 300 years of superheroic history? Even if he dies early on, he’s got to appear at least for a brief time. So why not use the Barry everyone knows and loves, Grant Gustin? He wouldn’t be the exact same version as Arrowverse Barry of course. But to use Marvel terminology, he could be a variant.

Maybe to differentiate, they could make him blonde like the comics. The casting of Gustin would lend automatic viewer attachment to this Barry. And it would make his death a bigger moment. When the Flash races to the DCU, we think Gunn would be wise to take this approach.
