Have you no decency, Mr. Zaslav!? I think we know the answer to that. The latest example comes as HBO and Max have opted not to renew their licensing agreement for new episodes of perennial children’s icon Sesame Street. This will end a programming deal which began in 2016 with HBO the place for new episodes to premiere. Episodes still came to the show’s historic home of PBS a few months later. This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter who shared HBO and Max will continue to license Sesame Street‘s back episode library through at least 2027.
The reason for this decision is, evidently, about strategy. From the THR piece, Max is “pivoting to focus more on adult and family programming, and placing less emphasis on kids fare like Sesame.” I can only assume this means more reality programming which has, since the Discovery merger, been more and more accentuated on the Max platform.
“We are excited to extend our 10-year partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, keeping Sesame Street’s iconic library available on Max through 2027,” a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop says. “We will continue to invest in our best-in-class programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that Sesame Street reaches as many children as possible for generations to come.”
This move does mean that Sesame Workshop is in the market for a new home for new episodes of Sesame Street. You’d think a streamer like Netflix or Disney+ would jump at the chance to be the home for new episodes, especially considering both have a history of catering to a child audience. This is all not to mention the fact that Sesame Street is an institution which just celebrated 55 years on TV. It still has the ability to create memes, which is truly the mark of a relevant production.
