How GEN V Season 2’s Finale Sets Up THE BOYS Season 5_1

Gen V season two’s finale ends quite explosively. And we mean that both literally and figuratively. In the previous episode, Marie and company discover a shocking truth about who Cipher really is. It turns out he’s just a dude named Doug who was being mind controlled by Thomas Godolkin. And the God U founder wants to “cull the herd” and kill off any supe he deems unnecessary or weak so supes (besides Homelander) can really rule. Things come to a head in episode 8 when he starts to enact his plan, and the Gen V finale sets things up perfectly for what we will see in The Boys season five.

Thomas Godolkin Took Compound V1 and Has Controlled Doug (formerly Cipher) Since 1996

In the episode, we go back to the season’s very first scene at the Odessa lab in 1967. Godolkin was able to inject himself with V1, which is the same type that Soldier Boy and Stormfront took. Surely we will learn more about it in Vought Rising. Godolkin did become badly burned in the fire but didn’t die, obviously, and he doesn’t age. Instead, he found a puppet to control and, according to Doug (formerly known as Cipher), he is the second puppet.

The first one died, and in 1996, Doug got a call from a guy named Dr. Fielder to come to his house for a repair. The doctor discovered that Doug was alone in the world and Godolkin took over, making Doug kill the doctor. Since then, he’s been stuck in a box inside his own mind, kind of like the Sunken Place. It is wild to think he’s been under mind control for nearly 30 years. And, it begs to question who Dr. Fielder is and how he tied into all this mess with God U and Vought.

Marie, Polarity, and Others Stop Goldolkin and He Dies in Gen V Finale

Sadly, Doug doesn’t get a happy ending. While riding with Polarity, Black Noir appears and kills him before capturing Polarity to imprison him. However, Sage purposely gives Polarity an out, showing that she may actually have some good in her after all. She’s certainly not happy about Thomas’ next plans to “cull the herd” and get rid of mediocre and weak supes like Homelander, the Deep, and Firecracker. And it is good that Polarity got out because Marie and the crew needed him badly.

Godolkin makes a bold move and goes live to announce that he’s giving all students a chance to work with him in a seminar, possibly get the number one ranking, and maybe even join the Seven. Marie tries to counter this, making a video to tell people to not trust him, but some supes are so desperate for that top spot that they go anyway. Of course, Godolkin uses his powers to basically make the supes beat the s**t out of each other.

Marie heals Cate and the whole crew goes to try to warn each other and stop him. Their plan is pretty brilliant by overloading the room with more supes than he can puppet, and they manage to get many of the supes free while Godolkin is down for the count. But he manages to gain control of Marie and uses her to nearly kill her sister and friends. Polarity comes in and is able to break the control, which allows Marie to finally pop Godolkin’s body into bloody chunks.

The Boys‘ Starlight/Annie and A-Train Show Up and Ask Marie, Annabeth, Sam, Cate, Emma, and Jordan to Join the Resistance

At the end of the episode, Polarity tells them to leave campus because Vought is coming and will look for another scapegoat. He insists on staying behind to clean things up and says they shouldn’t come back. They are traveling away from God U and are trying to figure out how to contact Stan Edgar when Starlight and A-Train both appear. They are the leaders of a resistance and want to join forces with Marie, Cate, Jordan, Emma, Annabeth, and Sam to fight against Vought and Homelander. Starlight also admits that she fell for Sage leaking the Odessa intel on purpose to try to shake things up.

What Gen V Season 2’s Finale Means for The Boys Season 5

So, this means that we will see the Gen V crew in The Boys season five. When Homelander gets wind of what happened at God U and begins to make the connections between Sage and Godolkin, he will be on a personal mission to kill Marie. She’s now far more powerful than what he’d be comfy with because, well, he wants to be the best supe of them all. There’s still so much to parse through, but this crew could easily combine their talents to free the Boys and find Butcher.

As we remember, he went totally rogue at the end of The Boys season four but he does have that supe killing virus. The question is, what will they have to do to get it from him? Is there a way that Butcher can come back from such betrayal and maybe use his powers to help instead of harm supes who want to do good? We will see when The Boys season five returns.
