It’s an age-old tale that Link and Zelda are romantically tied. True, it’s never explicitly stated in the games, but it’s not hard to pick up on the ambiguous undertones. Fans have discovered a description within the English translation of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment that threatens to derail everything we hold to be canon, defining the pair’s relationship as “just friends.” Suffice to say that fans are not falling for it. You can say what you want to say, Nintendo, but we all know the truth.
The description originates from an in-game journal entry from Princess Zelda’s ally, Lenalia. The entry reads, “…she smiled and mentioned she was simply following the example of a knight—and friend—from her own time.” Friend? Yeah, sure. ZeLink shippers are far from convinced.
Fans have taken to X/Twitter with their thoughts. Strangely enough, the word “friend” is left out altogether in the game’s original Japanese version, which adds yet another degree of skepticism. The whole ordeal has viciously reignited the decade-long debate over Link and Zelda’s true relationship.
The Evolution of Link and Zelda
Throughout the 40 year long history of The Legend of Zelda series, one detail has remained unclear. Are Link and Zelda romantically involved? With numerous hints and clues sprinkled throughout the games, many of us concede to say yes. The pair hold hands in Spirit Tracks and Zelda kisses Link on the cheek in Oracle of Ages. In Tears of the Kingdom, they even move in together, sharing one bed no less.
Despite all of this, Nintendo has purposely kept the pair’s relationship ambiguous. The most we’ve ever gotten was a quote from producer Eiji Aonuma in an interview with IGN.
“I will leave it to everyone’s imagination,” Aonuma said when asked about Link and Zelda’s relationship. “I don’t think that Zelda is a type of game where the development team says, ‘This is what Zelda is, this is what the story is, this is what the game is.’ Everything that the development team wants to convey has already been placed into the game. And the rest is up to the player’s imagination, and their reflection on how they feel… what they’ve experienced in the game.”
With a live-action movie in the works, it will surely be interesting to see how Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment decide to handle the characters’s romantic involvement. With any luck, it might confirm what we feel so strongly to be true. The film is in production now and set to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
