Hey, PCWorlders! I’ve used a tool called Steps Recorder in Window 10 and 11 in a lot the past. Basically, it lets you record a problem and its solution as an easy visual explainer. I’ve found it a great way to show family members how to navigate through multiple layers of Windows settings changes without having to go into great detail verbally.

They’re always impressed, but it’s really not hard. You can still access Steps Recorder by typing Steps Recorder into Windows Search. The thing is, though, Steps Recorder is being phased out. So, I’ve switched to using record function in the Windows Snipping tool.

You can use it the same way to record solutions to problems for easy troubleshooting with family or colleagues, or you can record something cool you’re doing on your PC that you want to share. Here’s how to use it:

What to do:

• Type Snipping into Windows Search and select the Snipping tool to open it.
• Now type Windows Key + Shift + R or click New and select the area of your screen you want to record. For settings changes in Windows, I recommend selecting the whole screen for better viewing.
• A horizontal shaped control box will appear at the top of your screen. Click start to begin recording your video. Recording will start after the countdown.
• Begin selecting the settings changes you want to show your in your video, or begin whatever else you wish to record on your screen.
• Click the stop button to finish. Save your file in a convenient location.

Tip: If you’re going to be showing colleagues or friends settings changes or other tips in your videos, it’s a good idea to do a run through rehearsal of your video beforehand, or to have a run sheet of settings to navigate to so that your video is straightforward and easy to understand.
