I Love This Minimalist Smart Lock, and It’s Half Off for Prime Day Amanda Blum | usagoldmines.com

Prime Day 2025 is here from Tuesday, July 8 to Friday, July 11, and Lifehacker is sharing the best sales based on product reviews, comparisons, and price-tracking tools.

I’ve tested a bunch of smart locks over the years, and the main thing I’ve noticed is that the keypads and modules seem to be getting bigger and uglier. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with the August lock: It is so small and low profile and it doesn’t announce itself from a mile away with backlit buttons. In fact, there is no keypad whatsoever. To unlock an August door, you use your phone or smartwatch, or you can simply use a regular key. Normally, this lock is $229, but its 49% off right now for Prime Day, down to $117.

For me, I didn’t want a keypad that was easy to hack or took up a lot of space. On the rare occasion I want to let someone else into the house, the August smart lock allows me to do so remotely, or I can grant a visitor limited access on their phone. I can set the amount of time the access is good for, and then easily revoke it.

The biggest change from using my key or other smart locks was the auto-unlock feature. If my phone is in my pocket, the August can unlock as I approach the door, and then lock behind me after I enter. Whether I’m juggling my dog and leash or groceries, this has turned out to be such a luxurious feature.

You can also set up two factor authentication for an additional layer of security. August lets you decide to auto lock the door after a certain amount of time—five minutes after you enter, for example. Something I appreciated about the August lock was that it won’t freeze up in bad weather, with a much better temperature rating than most locks (-22 to 140F).

Whether you are in the Google, Alexa, or Homekit ecosystem, August works with them all. It installs in less than 20 minutes. You can use the Doorsense feature to be alerted when the door is open or unlocked, which has been a lifesaver for me during the summer when my front door tends to pop open due to the humidity.
