New to Prime Day? We have a primer on everything you need to know. Sales are accurate at the time of publication, but prices and inventory are always subject to change.
I start most days with a ride on my NordicTrack S22i Studio Cycle bike—it’s been my go-to at-home workout since the pandemic, and right now, you can nab it for 41% off on Amazon. Here’s why I prefer it to other popular cycling alternatives like the Peloton.
Compared to the Peloton, the S22i is a more heavy-duty option that’s suitable for people of all heights. It weighs significantly more (205 lbs. vs. 135 lbs.), making assembly a bit more involved, but it also has a sturdier, more stable base. It does have a slightly wider footprint, but it still comfortably fits in a nook within my tiny home office. It has a higher weight limit of up to 350 lbs. compared to the 297 lbs. of a Peloton bike. The incline/decline (-10% to 20%) function is smooth with 24 levels of resistance, and the bike comes with a set of 3-lb. dumbbells for when you want to ramp up those cardio sessions even more.
As per this PCMag review, a major perk is the adjustable 22-inch Smart HD touchscreen with a built-in fan that lets you adjust resistance and incline/decline. It also streams over 17,000 iFIT classes and trainer-led workouts filmed both indoors and in dreamy outdoor locales. You can choose from immersive scenic routes, including a virtual ride of the entire 2020 Tour de France route with realistic simulations. You can also draw your own route using Google Maps, which uses Google Images to display locations. While the interface is well-designed, it can occasionally be laggy with some buffering, and the workout filtering system could be better streamlined.
Recently, I decided to opt out of the subscription and use the bike for manual rides only with my own music, making it versatile and allowing for workouts without being locked into the $39 monthly subscription. The screen displays metrics like cadence, laps completed, and time remaining, while recording and tracking stats to help you keep track of your progress. Unlike Peloton bikes, you don’t need specific clip-on shoes; the NordicTrack has hybrid pedals with an adjustable cage, so you can also wear them with regular sneakers if you don’t have clip-on shoes.
The one downside is that it doesn’t have the same high levels of connectivity and community compared to the Peloton bike, which offers 24-access to live instructor-guided studio classes. The Peloton also has a slightly heavier flywheel than the S22i, but the difference isn’t noticeable to most users. If you don’t mind a slightly heavier build and wider footprint, the feature-rich NordicTrack S22i Studio Cycle bike is a high-quality, well-built smart bike that offers great bang for your buck, especially at under $900 during Prime Day.
