Is Google’s Aluminium OS releasing this year? Sort of | usagoldmines.com

Google’s new operating system that combines Android with ChromeOS is already in production. Called Aluminium OS, some reports are saying that it’ll release later this year. But according to court documents (spotted by The Verge), it’s more likely to see a 2028 release.

Google’s head of Android, Sameer Samat, told a US judge in September 2025 that the company was working hard on the Android-ChromeOS project and hoped to see in 2026. However, those court documents show that Aluminium OS’s “fastest path” to market looks to commercial testing in late 2026 and a full release in 2028.

Whether Google can meet (or exceed) this goal will depend on many factors, including how well the Aluminium OS tests go. Last week, we saw a leaked video of Aluminium OS in action.

A full release in 2028?

According to The Verge, Aluminium OS’s development plan will involve “offering it to ‘commercial trusted testers’ in late 2026,” which means there will likely be some sort of limited release this year. From there, Google will likely need another two years for a full release.

This release schedule will likely affect all Chromebook users, but especially those in the “enterprise and education sectors.” New consumer devices, however, especially Chromebooks, will probably run Aluminium OS as soon as Google is ready.

We expect an official announcement about Aluminium OS’s launch in the summer. Until then, we might see more leaked details.

ChromeOS to continue until 2034

There was also new information about the end of ChromeOS. While Google previously remained vague and admitted that it wanted to support ChromeOS in parallel with Aluminium OS for “many more years,” we now have a specific figure.

According to Google’s lawyers in the court documents: “Even when the new OS that runs Chromebooks becomes available, it will not be compatible with all existing Chromebook hardware, requiring Google to maintain existing ChromeOS at least through 2033 to meet its ’10 year support commitment’ to existing users.” Taken at face value, this means ChromeOS will stick around until 2034.

However, it’s important to note that these statements were made in response to the court wanting to determine whether Google is a monopoly and should be forced to sell off Chrome and Android. (In September 2025, the court ultimately decided against that.)

So, will those legal words hold true for the next eight years? We’ll have to wait and see, just as we’ll have to wait and see how Aluminium OS actually pans out in its release.
