It’s been some time since we’ve heard anything about director J.J. Abrams’ upcoming mystery film. After the better part of the past fifteen years making Star Trek and then Star Wars films, the Super 8 director promised his next film would be an entirely original IP. Now, via Deadline, we have a release date Abrams The Great Beyond film, which arrives on November 13 of this year. We also have some casting details. The Great Beyond stars Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, along with Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson.
So what else do we know aboutThe Great Beyond, which originally went by the title Ghostwriter? Apparently, it centers on a fantasy author in the mold of Stephen King, played by The Running Man’s Glen Powell. His character is famous for a series of novels taking place in a fantastical world that became huge bestsellers. He later discovers that the mythical world he created is actually real. Eventually, Powell’s character must undertake a quest to return home from this reality. The ’80s sci-fi cult classic The Last Starfighter partially inspired this film, it seems. It wouldn’t be a J.J. Abrams movie if the ’80s did not inspire it in some way.
When it comes to his filography, J.J. Abrams has long been criticized as just “a franchise guy.” His first feature was Mission: Impossible III, followed up by his Star Trek reboot and Star Trek: Into Darkness. And then, of course, there were two Star Wars sequels. He only has one original IP in his catalog, the Amblin-inspired Super 8, which in many ways was Stranger Things before Stranger Things. With his new film, Abrams will have the chance to prove he is more than someone who can simply remix his favorite movies from childhood. We’ll find out if he can pull it off when The Great Beyond hits movie theaters and IMAX theaters this fall.
