You may have heard by now that the Super Mario Bros. are returning to the big screen for one super-sized sequel. After a sweeping box office success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie back in 2023, the iconic brotherly duo take on yet another adventure in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The sequel sees the return of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as his antsy brother Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. In addition, Illumination and Universal Pictures have just released a clip teasing the return of a certain turtlesque villian, albeit a much smaller version. Here’s Jack Black back in action as Bowser in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Bowser Is “Working Through His Demons“
Everyone knows Bowser to be the big, bad nemesis to Mario… except here we’re using the term “big” very lightly. The teaser clip reveals a miniature version of the Koopa in a tiny castle. The tiny tyrant, voiced by the one and only Jack Black, blows a fuse about his painting as he seethes up at the regular-sized brothers. The tantrum is quickly followed by an apology, with Bowser saying he’s “still working through his demons.”
Why exactly is Bowser so small, you might ask? By consuming a Mini Mushroom, that’s how. Many of those who watched the prequel may remember that in order to thwart their archnemesis’ plan, Mario and Luigi fed Bowser a Mini Mushroom that essentially turned him into Antman. It’s hard to enact an evil plan while trapped in a jar, after all. Still, I highly doubt the character will remain pint-sized for the entirely of the follow-up. Although, wouldn’t that be kinda fun?
The character become an unexpected treat from the first film. Thanks to his heartfelt ballad (you know the one,) the word “peaches” still jolts us like a sleeper agent to this day. It’s fun to see the musical villian return.
An exciting detail of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the addition of two new characters: Princess Rosalina, voiced by MCU star Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr., played by Benny Safdie. With Bowser’s villianous offspring now in the mix, he’ll surely be instrumental in returning his father to normal size. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases in theaters on April 3, 2026.
