The rebirth of a new DCU is nearly upon us, with the upcoming release of James Gunn’s Superman. But even though it’s now been years since the previous Man of Steel Henry Cavill graced our screens, there are some die-hard DCEU Snyder-verse fans who just can’t let go. That’s putting it mildly. They are so dedicated to Zack Snyder’s now-defunct DCEU (aka, the Snyderverse) that they will do just about anything to kill any momentum Superman has. Presumably to reinstate their preferred version, as though that is likely ever to happen.
Via Variety, we’ve learned that James Gunn responded on Threads to a question about a segment of Snyder fans hoping to negatively impact the potential success of his Superman. Their Reddit manifesto to derail Superman’s potential success includes the usual posting spoilers on the internet early, and review bombing. And a few other very dumb, big waste of time things. Here’s what Gunn said on social media about all of this:
I think we will survive. I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events.
At this point, the Snyderbros who refuse to see these characters in any other form have become just a vocal minority. But they often have a very loud bullhorn. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn elaborated further, saying “I don’t mind it. I think it’s good. I think you don’t wanna have everybody root for you.” He added “These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.” Gunn is being far more diplomatic about some of these unhinged behaviors than we would be. But, he’s the co-head of the studio. He’s got to play it cool. Meanwhile, Superman is tracking for a huge opening weekend. So we’ll see how these keyboard warriors find a way to deal with that if it happens.
