The DCU continues to expand, with a Superman spinoff series for Jimmy Olsen coming to HBO Max. Thanks to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda are showrunning a new series called DC Crime, starring Skyler Gisondo as the iconic Daily Planet photographer, who will serve as host of this mock docuseries. The show will center on investigations of different villains in the DCU. The first villain will be one of the Flash’s greatest foes, the hyper-intelligent ape, Gorilla Grodd. Other Daily Planet reporters will also be a part of this series… Although, probably not Superman‘s David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively. (At least not as series regulars.)

A Jimmy Olsen HBO Max/DCU TV Series Is In Line with the History of the Character
Jimmy Olsen was once so popular that he received his own ongoing comic book series in the 1950s. In Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen, the young photographer/cub reporter would get into all sorts of wacky Silver Age misadventures. He’d turn into the giant Godzilla-esque Turtle Boy, and gain Plastic Man-like powers as Elastic Lad. He even partnered with a non-powered Superman inside the Kryptonian bottle city of Kandor as Flamebird, the Robin-inspired sidekick to Kal-El’s vigilante, Nightwing. Yes, the same hero Dick Grayson took his name from. The series, which ran for twenty years and 163 issues, is actually where DC’s “Big Bad” Darkseid first appeared. Superman revealed Jimmy as an unexpected ladies’ man, which is actually comic-book accurate—and now he’s following in the footsteps of Jimmy Olsen’s past to snag his own DCU TV series, DC Crime.

Gorilla Grodd Is Coming to the DCU in DC Crime
The introduction of Gorilla Grodd to the DCU via the Jimmy Olsen TV series means we’ll likely also see his home, Gorilla City. That’s the secret kingdom in the African jungle of super-intelligent apes. Creature Commandos already mentioned that Grodd exists in the DCU, and now it looks like he’ll appear in live-action soon.
Could the DCU’s Flash Arrive in the Jimmy Olsen TV Series?
Could the arrival of Grodd into the DCU mean that his arch-nemesis, The Flash, already exists in this universe as well? It would be wild if the Flash’s first appearance in the DCU is as part of a Jimmy Olsen series. We don’t know for sure, but, hey, with James Gunn at the helm of the world, we don’t rule it out either. It seems like something he’d enjoy. It would be hard to focus on Grodd and not show his #1 enemy. Grant Gustin has said he’s down for more Flash in the new DCU. Could it be for this new show?
More About the HBO Max Jimmy Olsen TV Series, DC Crime
Skyler Gisondo will star in this Jimmy Olsen TV series. And, although the original report says Lois and Clark won’t appear in the HBO Max DCU spinoff, we have a feeling that cameos may happen. DC Studios has not revealed a production start or release date for this series as of yet.
