One of the breakout characters in the Star Wars prequel trilogy was Finn, the ex-stormtrooper-turned-Resistance-hero played by John Boyega. But in the years since the trilogy ended, Boyega has said many times that he has mixed feelings about how Lucasfilm handled his character. Especially after so much racially targeted online harassment. Much of the promotion for The Force Awakens suggested that Finn would be our new Jedi protagonist, only to use him as a bait and switch, revealing Rey was the true Jedi heir. But according to a report from Screen Rant, via Variety, it seems the change in leadership at Lucasfilm, with Dave Filoni replacing Kathleen Kennedy, could possibly mean a return for Finn.
While appearing at Megacon in Orlando, a fan in the audience asked Boyega to “Get Dave on the phone” after he was asked about a Finn comeback. His response? “I actually have, actually.” So what does this all mean? We doubt Boyega talked to Filoni just to say “Good luck in your new position.” In the past, Boyega has dismissed the possibility of Finn appearing in a live-action Disney+ series. So we don’t think it’s that. Besides, it seems Lucasfilm is backing away from doing Disney+ Star Wars shows that could be films instead. But what would a Finn-centric film look like? There are clues in The Rise of Skywalker as to what it might entail.
Certain scenes in The Rise of Skywalker broadly hinted that Finn had Force potential. He clearly sensed when Rey “died,” among other things. While it’s possible that Finn is a co-lead in the upcoming New Jedi Order film featuring Rey, that feels like he’d be playing second banana to Daisy Ridely again. We think what Boyega would want here is a new Star Wars project finally headlined by a Black actor. So maybe Rey trains Finn, and we catch up to him in full Jedi status, years after the sequels? It seems like an easy enough sell to us. We will have to wait and see what the future holds for the First Order stormtrooper once designated FN-2187.
