We’re somehow 10 years since the premiere of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Were we ever so young? The first outing for Disney in the galaxy far, far away ended up a massive financial success. In fact, most of the Star Wars movies produced under the House of Mouse turned a profit. That doesn’t mean all of them garnered huge and undying fan love. In fact, the opposite was true more often than not. The same holds true for many members of the cast, not least John Boyega. The actor who portrayed Finn has had many choice words about what he would have done differently, most recently during an appearance at a Florida convention.

Boyega—whose performance in The Force Awakens bolstered him to global fame—has expressed many times that he feels Finn’s role was increasingly diminished in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The actor-producer responded to a question about what he’d do differently and he said the following (via Deadline).
Boyega said that he would not have gotten “rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that,” adding, “The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.”
The actor also noted that the new characters would not “just grab stuff and know what to do with it. No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise. I’d do that.”
He later went on to throw shade at some of Rian Johnson’s concepts with regard to Luke Skywalker’s Jedi abilities.
“I would try to expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it in within the respective boundaries that stay true.”
Boyega added, “But Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock. Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more way more.”

Hindsight is 20/20 and it’s certainly easy for someone to say what they’d have done after the fact. Many, many decisions go into the making of these enormous franchise movies, so it can’t rest on one person. Or even a couple (ahem Kathleen Kennedy ahem). That said, Boyega was in the thick of it, and it’s not as though he’s the lone voice of dissent among the sequel trilogy cast over the years. Perhaps one day he’ll get his wish.
