We will forever love just how much the original The Karate Kid movies starring Ralph Macchio capture everything great about ’80s cinema. We also love that they got cheesier with each sequel. (You can’t tell us The Karate Kid Part III isn’t essentially a comedy.) But if you expected that kind of silliness to permeate Sony Pictures’ new generational crossover, you can forget about it. The first trailer for Karate Kid: Legends is an intense and emotional glimpse at what happens when martial arts masters come together to train a new student in need.
If you’re not ready to face any opponent after that trailer watch it again. It has us ready to take on even the most skilled black belt. This is an effective, emotional first-look at what to expect when Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han and Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso unite to help mold a young man. They’ll be teaching Ben Wang’s Li Fong. But why will they come together? What is it about this kid? Here’s the official synopsis for Karate Kid: Legends from Sony Pictures to go along with its trailer:
In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.
Karate Kid: Legends comes from director Jonathan Entwhistle and writer Rob Lieber. It also stars Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen. It arrives in theaters on May 30, 2025. And when it does, it will be no laughing matter.
Well, we’re sure we’ll laugh a little, but you know what we mean.
