LANTERNS Showrunner Says Series Is a ‘Buddy Cop’ Show with Superheroes Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

Now that Superman and Peacemaker are behind us, the next big DCU project is Lanterns on HBO Max. Based on the Green Lantern comics, the new series will focus on two members of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Talking to Men’s Health (via Deadline) in a profile of Aaron Pierre, showrunner Chris Mundy gave more details on the series. He described Lanterns as being as much a “buddy cop” show as it is about superheroes. Here’s what he had to say about the dynamic between the two series leads, which may hint at the future of one character:

Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins? That push and pull between those two characters is really important. So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you’re yelling and screaming. That’s what we’re trying to convey: He knows he belongs, so he doesn’t have to overcompensate.

The word “replacement” suggests that DC Studios is gearing up to have John Stewart as Earth’s primary Green Lantern. When he was originally introduced in 1971, John was the “backup” owner of the power ring, serving as Hal Jordan’s replacement. He eventually replaced him when Hal Jordan retired. Hal would eventually un-retire and the two would be partners, patrolling their “beat” together. But the use of the world replacement suggests that Hal might retire in this series… or even die. He may even become a villain, which is what happened famously in the comics when he became Parallax.

Mundy also indicated that he’s going to embrace all of John Stewart’s many incarnations across the comics. When John Stewart first appeared in 1971, he was described as an architect. But in the animated Justice League series, they gave him a backstory as a retired Marine sniper. The comics reconciled those versions eventually in the 2000s, describing Stewart as a former Marine who became an architect. And Lanterns will reflect that history.

[John] was a Marine sniper, which requires a certain kind of focus and diligence. After the Marines, he becomes an architect, so there’s an artistic side to him. Those are a lot of elements that an actor has got to be able to project. And Aaron is someone who understands that physicality as a trained theater actor. We talked a lot about that how being a Marine is John’s job, but it’s not his entire personality. He’s as much an artist as he is a Marine. There’s a real balance of the physical and the artistic that’s just innately inside of Aaron, and I think it’s essential.

Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will also be more creative with his power ring constructs than Hal Jordan, a former test pilot. John’s creativity as an architect means he’ll be able to make more interesting objects with his ring than Hal Jordan’s giant hammers and boxing gloves. Mundy said “To manifest things from the Lantern rings, you’ve got to manifest something from your brain—but also kind of from your soul. What does that look like? What does it feel like? I imagine it’s not much different than being a sculptor or a painter. And Aaron had to be able to sell that John could have that ability. And that’s what he did.”

Lanterns will premiere on HBO Max sometime in early 2026.
