The usually cosmic Green Lantern mythology comes down to Earth in the first trailer for HBO Max’s Lanterns series. We don’t see any aliens (that we know of), and barely any glowing green powers. And there’s just a brief glimpse of the power ring. However, at the very end of the trailer, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) asks Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan if he’s talked to the other Lanterns. Jordan says, “I’m the only human, they’re aliens. One of them is a f****ing squirrel.” This squirrel Jordan mentions is actually a canonical DC Comics character. He’s an alien Lantern, a talking squirrel named Ch’p. His history in Green Lantern comics goes back to the ’80s.

Ch’p first appeared in Green Lantern #148 in 1982. Doom Patrol writer Paul Kupperberg and Shazam! artist Don Newton created him. In DC Comics lore, the Green Lantern Corps is a vast intergalactic police force, spread across 3,600 sectors of space. One or two Lanterns patrol each sector. Earth’s Sector, 2814, actually has several Lanterns. In Sector 1014, the Green Lantern protector is from the planet H’Lven, home to intelligent creatures who resemble Earth squirrels. After that sector’s protector died, his ring passed down to the fearless Ch’p. Green Lantern Killowog trained him on the planet Oa.

After the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Ch’p relocated to Earth, joining several other Lanterns in California. When Lantern John Stewart became the caretaker of the alien Mosaic world, made up of several different planets, Ch’p joined him there. Sadly, DC killed off Ch’p not too long after, when a yellow truck ran him over like a regular Earth squirrel, an inglorious way to go out. Ch’p resurrected briefly during the Blackest Night event in the 2000s, before dying once again. This time, at the hands of former fellow Lantern Guy Gardner. The indignity! His successor as Green Lantern is the equally adorable B’dg, pronounced as “Badge.” Luckily, no car has run over B’dg yet.

Despite DC killing him off in the early ’90s, Ch’p remains a fan-favorite Lantern. He’s popped up in several animated series, even if only briefly. And none other than Diego Luna voiced Ch’p in the animated League of Super Pets movie. Many fans believed that the squirrel Clark saved during the kaiju attack in Superman was Ch’p, but no, it was not. It was just a regular old squirrel. But now, we know that Ch’p exists out there in the DCU. While Lanterns definitely feels way too gritty to have a talking squirrel as part of the series, we know James Gunn loves alien creatures that look like cute Earth animals. He made Rocket Raccoon a household name after all. So maybe Ch’p appears in Man of Tomorrow? We honestly wouldn’t be surprised.
