We’ve all heard of using Duolingo to learn a new language… but what about Netflix? According to the streamer, more than ever, people are using its international and multilingual offering of movies and TV shows to help them learn a brand new language. We admit, we hadn’t thought about Netflix as a language learning opportunity, but it is an interesting proposition. To help those in their quest to learn and experience media in languages other than their own, Netflix is upping the ante on its dubbing and subtitling offerings. While a plethora of options were already available on mobile and web interfaces, these expanded dubbing and subtitling tools are now also available on our TV screens.
You can check out how Netflix’s in-depth dubbing and subtitling options work in the video below. And, we guess, get ready to learn a new language with Netflix.
All it takes is the click of a button, and Bridgerton, The Witcher, One Piece, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and other Netflix titles can go from English to Spanish, Czech, Hindi, and many more languages. This can happen audibly or with the use of subtitles, and we have to say, watching it in action is impressive. You can even watch your movie or series in Spanish and add Korean subtitles. The options are endless. We love the kind of exposure this might give movies and series that are not natively in English, and we love the accessibility this gives to all content of every kind. Stepping outside work made in your own language is a truly important experience, and we feel glad Netflix wants to facilitate it.
Netflix shares, “As more of our members enjoy shows and films from around the world — nearly a third of all viewing on Netflix is for non-English stories — subtitles and dubbing are more important than ever. Our catalog includes a wide variety of TV shows and movies in over 30 languages, from critically acclaimed films to binge-worthy series, which lets our members immerse themselves in different cultures and languages from around the globe.”

Additionally, Netflix specifically acknowledges those trying to learn a new language via the streaming platform. Netflix notes, “We also often hear that our members use Netflix to learn a foreign language thanks to the many languages available on our service. So we offer several additional features to support language learning, including the ability to customize subtitles, and the Browse by Language feature on PC computers. These helpful features enhance the accessibility of our shows and movies, while supporting those set on being multilingual… So if you’re trying to learn a new language by viewing your favorite Mexican show with Korean dubbing and English subtitles, or watching the latest Netflix discovery with family members who speak several languages, the Netflix TV experience just got a whole lot more multilingual. “
We definitely support a multilingual experience. And hey, we just might use these new Netflix subtitling and dubbing features to try our hand at getting the hang of a language we’ve never thought about learning before.
