Cinderella had her time to shine in Disney’s live-action remake spotlight way back in 2015. Now, all these years later, it’s time for her rotten siblings to have their own big screen moment. Not that they’ll enjoy it. The Lonely Island‘s Akiva Schaeffer will direct Stepsisters, a comedy spinoff focused on the beloved princess’ unlovable relatives.
Deadline reports Disney is getting the Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers team back together. Schaeffer will once again direct a script from Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. The two screenwriters will “rework” an original script by Tangled’s Michael Montemayor. The film will focus on Cinderella’s notorious stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella, who despite their mother’s many efforts, failed to woo Prince Charming.
Schaeffer directed last year’s Naked Gun reboot, which Gregor and Mand also co-wrote. But while we’d love to see a Cinderella spinoff with that movie’s exact comedic tone (just imagine that), 2022’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is almost certainly a far better indication of what we can expect from the trio. This is still a Disney production after all. But that meta-take on the famous chipmunks also proves that we should not expect a comedy geared towards kids, either. No film that brought “Ugly Sonic” to the silver screen could be called a kids’ movie.
Little else is known about the film right now, including whether it will take place during the exact same time as the plot of Cinderella, before, after, or a mix of times. There’s certainly plenty of fertile (and funny) ground to tell the stepsisters story during the events of the classic tale. But we’d also love to see them deal with the fallout of their failures. Seeing those two get their comeuppance, both in animation and live-action, is always fun. Having to watch them live with it could be even better.
