Chuck Norris was born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma. He served in the US Air Force from 1958 to 1962, and acquired his nickname Chuck during that time. He also started his martial arts journey while in the military, opening his own studio after his honorable discharge.
His work spans decades, from his role in the iconic The Way of the Dragon (1972) alongside Bruce Lee to An Eye for an Eye (1981) to Code of Silence (1985). Gen Xers and Millennials grew up watching Chuck Norris on the series Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran from 1993 to 2001. Norris largely stepped away from acting in the 2010s but he became an Internet meme legend because, well, he could beat up anyone. He used his passion and skill for martial arts to found two systems: American Tang Soo Do and the Chuck Norris system.Â
Norris’ conservative political views often popped up in news headlines, specifically his support of right-wing leadership, gun rights support, and condemnation of major Democratic figures. It made him a polarizing figure to some, with many finding themselves not surprised by his stances.Â
He is survived by his five children and a host of grandkids.
