Marvel Comics’ SPIDER-MAN ’94 Will Resolve the ’90s Cartoon’s Decades-Old Cliffhanger Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

Back in the ’90s, Spider-Man: The Animated Series ruled weekday afternoons, along with X-Men: The Animated Series and Batman: The Animated Series. But unlike those other two, Spidey ended his 65-episode run on a massive cliffhanger, with his love, Mary Jane Watson, lost somewhere in the Multiverse. With the help of Madame Web, he goes off to search for her, but the story was never continued. Although X-Men ’97 confirmed Spidey and MJ did indeed reunite, we never found out how. Until now, that is. Via IGN, we’ve learned Marvel will answer this nearly 30-year-old question in a new comic book series, Spider-Man ’94.

The four-issue Spider-Man ’94 limited series picks up where the cartoon’s unresolved cliffhanger ending left off back in 1998. (So why not call it Spider-Man ’98? We don’t know.) In this series, Peter Parker and MJ return to New York, and Spidey will fight two iconic members of his rogues gallery who will make their debuts in the ’90s Marvel animated universe at last. Comic book legend (and Justice League International co-creator) J.M. DeMatteis, who worked on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, will write all four issues. It will feature ’90s-inspired art by Jim Towe, with covers by Nick Bradshaw, Ron Lim, and John Tyler Christopher. According to DeMatteis, they’re treating this as “the next season of the show.”

So, who could the two iconic villains be? We’re going to guess one is Sandman, whom Marvel barred from appearing in Spider-Man: The Animated Series because he was going to be in James Cameron’s unmade Spider-Man movie. The other is possibly the Jackal, the villain responsible for putting Peter Parker through the infamous Clone Saga. We’ll find out just who these villains are when Spider-Man ’94 #1 hits comics shops on September 3.
