“At last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have revenge.” Those were among the only words spoken by Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. And all these years later, it seems Maul is still all about that revenge life. In the new trailer for the new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, we see that the former Sith Lord-turned-crime lord is out for revenge on the Empire that discarded him, and now he’s got a new apprentice to help him. You can see all the dark side action in the new trailer for Dave Filoni’s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord down below:
And here’s the official synopsis for the series from Disney+ and Lucasfilm, as well as the new poster:
Set after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this pulpy adventure finds Maul plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who could be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.

So what can we glean from this trailer? It looks like takes place in the very early days of the Galactic Empire, just likeThe Bad Batch. Much like that series, we see early versions of the Stormtrooper armor, but there are still Clone Wars-era troop carriers in use. We also see two Inquisitors we’ve seen before. First is the Eleventh Brother, whom we know Ahsoka Tano kills years later in Tales of the Jedi. We also see Marrok, another Inquisitor who eventually dies and becomes a zombified puppet of the Nightsisters. He appeared first in Ahsoka season one. We know that by the time of Solo, roughly a decade later, Maul’s criminal cartel, Crimson Dawn, will be in full swing. It feels like Shadow Lord is giving us the origin story for this criminal empire.

The voice cast for Star Wars: Maul- Shadow Lord includes Sam Witwer as Maul, with Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario. Rounding out the cast are Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Rebels’ Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David W. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok, and Steve Blum as Icarus.
Star Wars: Darth Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on Disney+ April 6, 2026. Two episodes will premiere each week, with the final two airing on May the 4th.
