In 1997, one of the greatest sci-fi action comedy films ever hit the big screen. That movie is none other than Men in Black. Will Smith’s skyrocketing career went even higher thanks to portraying J, a brash NYPD officer who is given a chance to work for a secret agency that monitors extraterrestrial beings. He starred opposite the legendary Tommy Lee Jones, who played the no-nonsense and rather philosophical K, a seasoned Men in Black agent who recruits and trains J. The film was a blockbuster that led to three more sequels, the last which didn’t star Smith nor Jones. (That film was led by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.) And it seems we are getting another Men in Black sequel written by Bad Boys for Life’s Chris Brenner.Â
According to Deadline, the plot details are not known at this time, nor is casting. But, considering Brenner wrote the last film from another Will Smith-led franchise, Bad Boys, it seems Smith could return to the role. The report does say that Brenner’s alleged plan is to finish the script and send it over to Will Smith to see if he will reprise his role as Agent J in the Men in Black sequel.
If that does work out, it will be VERY interesting to see how J returns. His story did come pretty full circle in Men in Black III after realizing and accepting that K neutralized him as a child after killing his father. And Will Smith seems to be very into just chilling and sporadically acting at the moment. He’s very rich so he can be picky about his projects. But maybe the right script will get him back in that black suit once again.
And, for no real reason at all besides it is an awesome scene, I want to share that first in-depth conversation that K and J had about humanity.
