MLB Commissioner confirms league will comply with Senate in gambling investigation Suswati Basu | usagoldmines.com

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. The Commissioner of Major League Baseball (MLB), Rob Manfred, has confirmed that the sport will comply fully with requests for information from the Senate

The Commissioner of Major League Baseball (MLB), Rob Manfred, has confirmed that the sport will comply fully with requests for information from the Senate as part of a wider gambling inquiry.

His response comes on the back of a letter from the United States’ Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, headed by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell.

MLB to comply in Senate gambling enquiry

Manfred and the MLB have been given a deadline of December 5, 2025, to respond to the Senate inquiry. As we reported, Ted Cruz posted to social media about the access request.

“The recent indictment alleges Cleveland Guardians players Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz purposefully threw certain pitches and told friends to place prop bets beforehand or made bets themselves,” said the Senate release.

Manfred has responded, saying, “We’re going to respond fully and cooperatively and on time to the Senate inquiry.”

Clase and Ortiz plead not guilty

We covered the trajectory of the allegations against Clase and Ortiz, with both pleading not guilty to rigging pitches for financial gain in violation of the league’s gambling rules for active players.

Clase was released on a $600,000 bond and was informed that his travel would be limited to New York and Ohio, and that he would submit his passport and be subject to GPS monitoring of his movements.

Ortiz, similarly, was released on a $500,000 bond in Brooklyn Federal Court after being arrested at Boston International Airport. He had already submitted his passport to the authorities, and he was limited to New York, Massachusetts and Ohio.

As a result of both pitchers being part of the enquiry, the MLB and sports betting partners responded by limiting pitch bet wagers to a $200 maximum. Pitch betting will also be removed from parlays or bets built to include multiple props that would usually include pitching.

NY Daily News Sports writer, Gary Phillips posted the news via X (formerly Twitter), saying “MLB and its major sportsbook partners just announced new limits on pitch-level markets.”

The MLB released statement regarding the decision said these types of bets “present heightened integrity risks because they focus on one-off events that can be determined by a single player and can be inconsequential to the outcome of the game.”

“We think the steps we’ve taken in terms of limiting the size of these prop bets and prohibiting parlays off them is a really, really significant change that should reduce the incentive for anyone to be involved in an inappropriate way,” said Manfred in regards to the betting changes.
