Catan‘s place in board game history is secure. Now its ready to secure a very big place on Netflix. The streaming site has acquired the rights to the beloved game. Not just for a single game night, either. It plans to trade tabletops for TV shows, movies, and video games.
Netflix has purchased the exclusive global rights to Catan (news we first heard about at Deadline). The streamer will reportedly begin developing live-action and animated scripts for both television series and films based on Klaus Teuber’s 1995 tabletop classic The Settlers of Catan. That’s the kind of expansion we’d expect after a couple years of success, not right off the bat. But that’s not all Netflix wants to do with its newest property. It will also work on unscripted projects and video games based on the game first published in Germany. It’s the game that helped introduce Euro-style board games to an American audience. It also introduced “Eurogames” to players around the world. You can enjoy a night of Catan, currently in its 6th edition, in more than 40 languages.
“Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, Head of Scripted Series, US and Canada, Netflix, in a statement. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”
Asmodee’s Darren Kyman, Catan Studio’s Pete Fenlon, and Teuber’s sons Guido Teuber and Benjamin Teuber will produce all Catan projects alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee. We assume they’ll divvy up production responsibilities in a way that honors Catan itself. That means they’ll make some questionable/frustrating attempts at bartering before everything devolves into a screaming match.
If Netflix turns that into a TV show we’ll definitely be tuning in during board game night.
