Back in the early ’80s, the arcade game Dragon’s Lair was the cutting edge of video game technology. Back then, graphics in games were basic pixels representing tiny spaceships shooting asteroids, or Pac-Man. Dragon’s Lair used actual animated footage, animated by Don Bluth. This was leaps and bounds over what everyone else was doing. Trust us, kids at the local mall arcade lost their dang minds. Now, four decades later, Dragon’s Lair is looking to make a comeback, this time as a film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dragon’s Lair is now in development as a film for Netflix. Ryan Reynolds is attached as a producer, but not as star. The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted’s James Bobin will direct.
In the game, the player fought as a knight named Dirk the Daring. As Dirk, one had to rescue the beautiful Princess Daphne from a powerful dragon called Singe, and a sinister wizard by the name of Mordroc. Yes, the game borrowed heavily from a lot of popular fantasy books and films. The animation in the game was by the legendary Don Bluth, the animator behind films like The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, and All Dogs Go to Heaven. Dragon’s Lair rode a wave of high fantasy popularity in the ’80s. This trend was fueled by things like Dungeons & Dragons, and movies like Dragonslayer, Beastmaster, and several others.
The original Dragon’s Lair arcade game was so popular that ABC commissioned a Saturday morning animated series the very next year. In that short-lived cartoon, actor Clive Revill narrated Dirk’s adventures. He was the original voice of Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back. Several sequel games followed, but none were as popular as the original 1983 game. Currently, Dragon’s Lair doesn’t have a cast or a production start date yet. But it sounds like they are looking to get the ball rolling on this one soon.
