It’s been a while since we’ve gotten anything truly new from StarCraft. Blizzard’s iconic sci-fi RTS series has been largely dormant for a while now, with World of Warcraft, Diablo 4, and Overwatch 2 taking most of the studio’s attention. But between all of these games, there have been ongoing rumors of a return. Speculation abounds over a possible StarCraft FPS, and right now, that feels like it might actually be happening. A new rating for a StarCraft project has just appeared. Let’s start theorizing.
Since 2010’s StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, there hasn’t been a new, full game in the series. Blizzard has released StarCraft 2 expansions and a remaster of the first RTS game since then, but there’s been nothing in the realm of a complete sequel. Back in 2019, there were reports that Blizzard canceled a StarCraft FPS, but that was never confirmed. Instead, Blizzard cryptically said, “There is always the possibility that we’ll make the decision to not move forward on a given project.”
Recently, however, talk of a new StarCraft has come back to the forefront. A Blizzard developer listed a new game on their LinkedIn, and described it as an “unannounced triple-A RPG-FPS title.” At the time, there was no indication if this game was based on a new or existing Blizzard IP, or if it was even still in development.
Then, suddenly, we got something. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier wrote in his newest book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, that the StarCraft FPS was back on the menu. In the book, Schreier claims that former Far Cry executive director Dan Hay, who joined Blizzard in 2022, is working on a new version of the StarCraft FPS. So, is the shooter coming out this time?
That brings us to today. As spotted by Game Rant, there appears to be a new StarCraft game rating on the ESRB’s website. Clicking the rating takes you to a dead webpage, but searching for StarCraft itself on the ESRB website returns something intriguing. The mystery StarCraft game is still present. When it comes to potential platforms, the only thing listed is ‘online.’
With renewed talk of a StarCraft FPS and Blizzard hiring for a number of roles, including on some sort of unannounced shooter, this ESRB rating could very well be another piece of the puzzle. Will we see StarCraft return in the near future? Only time will tell.
