Stargate began its story on the big screen in 1994. Since then, it has expanded its lore through a myriad of movies and TV shows. Now it’s ready to take a portal to Prime Video for a new adventure. Amazon MGM Studios has announced it has greenlit a new series of the military sci-fiction franchise.
Amazon MGM Studios has followed through on a report that sci-fi fans hoped the studio would make good on. It has ordered a “new original” Stargate show. It calls the series a “bold new chapter in the iconic science fiction franchise.”
The show comes from creator Martin Gero (Blindspot). He will also serve as showrunner. Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Dean Devlin (Stargate), and Roland Emmerich (Stargate) have joined as executive producers. Longtime Stargate veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will work on this latest installment as consulting producers.
In a statement Gero talked about his own history with the franchise and what this new series means to him:
Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.
Amazon MGM Studios did not share any production details or casting news yet. But this announcement indicates the show will not have a connection to many of the series’ previous installments, which might be for the best considering its many shows and movies. Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development, Amazon MGM Studios, touched on that in a statement.
“Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” said Pepper. “In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
