Pokémon is releasing a new anime short called Dragonite and the Postman. CoMix Wave Films, the production company behind the critically acclaimed film Your Name, will produce. The short will come out on February 27, also known as Pokémon Day. This news comes after confirmation that in 2027, Pokémon will also collaborate with Aardman, the Claymation studio responsible for Wallace & Gromit.
The Pokémon anime film will follow the main character, Hana, a young girl who looks up to a Dragonite, who is a postman. Hana receives a letter without the name and address of the sender. She sets out to find the anonymous sender with the help of her trusty Fuecoco. When they find the letter’s sender, Rio, they find out the letter was for his father’s birthday. However, his father is in Kanto, and it is the day of his birthday. Dragonite, Hana, Rio, and, of course, Fuecoco must deliver the letter before it’s too late.
In the Pokémon universe, Dragonites have appeared as mail carriers for years, from Mewtwo Strikes Back to the trading card game and merchandise. Its Pokédex entry says Dragonites can fly despite its big and bulky physique and circles the globe in just 16 hours. With its incredibly fast flying, its occupation makes perfect sense.
CoMix Wave Films is responsible for all of the revered anime film director Makoto Shinkai’s films, including Suzume and 5 Centimeters per Second, so I’m very excited about the film’s animation style. The short will release on YouTube, as per the information available now. The Poké Times Twitter announced that more information, perhaps a trailer, would be released February 13.
