Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of the iconic PlayStation franchise God of War has found its titular god. In a press release, Prime announced actor Ryan Hurst, known for playing Opie in Sons of Anarchy, will play Kratos in the series. Hurst has more than a passing familiarity with this franchise, as he played Thor in PlayStation’s God of War: Ragnarök, for which he was nominated for a BAFTA Award. The series has already received an order for two seasons, and pre-production is already underway in Canada. director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) has signed on to direct the first two episodes.
According to the official character description, Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose up to command armies in the service of his homeland. All until one day, he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War. Because of this deal, he lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Over the course of ten wildly successful games, Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures, and gods alike. And over the years, he has become an iconic character in pop culture.
In the new God of War live-action series, the story will closely follow the last two games as he deals with something new: his ten-year-old son, Atreus. This father-son dynamic began a new chapter in the game franchise, and will serve as the basis for this new live-action series. Together, the father and son duo will go on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Kratos will attempt to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to show his dad what it means to be a better human. This new iteration will be spearheaded by Ronald D. Moore, famous for his work on shows like Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind. Not to mention a metric ton of Star Trek. God of War will likely hit Prime Video sometime in 2027.
