In Stranger Things, there are many references to things from other fictional worlds, specifically the land of Dungeons & Dragons. But, when the series began to expand the backstory of Eleven (aka Jane), her mother Terry, and the experiments at Hawkins Laboratory, the Duffer Brothers tapped into a disturbing era of real-life history. The story behind how Eleven got her powers revealed that Terry was a part of Project MKUltra, an experiment by the CIA using psychedelic drugs, mental abuse, and physical torture to try to develop mind control techniques. And, that’s close to what happened in real life with the MKUltra program, which now has a limited series called Project: MKUltra in development at HBO.
This real covert operation took place during the 1950s and 1960s with some volunteers and quite a few unwilling participants who were subject to testing by the CIA. Several brainwashing techniques, including dangerous drugs and torture, were meant to force people into confessions. So essentially, the government wanted to be able to control the minds of people with certain techniques. It is very strange and disturbing, to say the least.
According to Deadline, the Project: MKUltra series at HBO is the brainchild of The Sopranos creator David Chase, who will serve as its writer and presumably showrunner. Right now, there’s no casting information available at this time. But it would be interesting if a Stranger Things actor appeared in the series considering it brough this part of American history to a new generation’s attention.
Project: MKUltra is a dramatic thriller about Sidney Gottlieb, a chemist and spy who was in control of the CIA experiments. Known as The Black Sorcerer, his experiments were incredibly dangerous and often deadly. Basically, Dr. Brenner is the fictional equivalent of this guy. We are very intrigued by this news and curious about how much truth the series will share.
