Every kid dreams of living inside a toy store. But its doubtful any of those countless childhood fantasies involved hiding out inside a toy store because you escaped from prison. But that’s exactly what one convict did, and now his story is coming to the big screen. The first trailer for the action-comedy rom-com Roofman starring Channing Tatum brings to life the tale of a burglar who evaded the authorities by turning a Toys “R” Us into his secret hideout.
A great cast, a great premise, and the chance to let us visit a fully functional, fully stocked Toys “R” Us? Roofman had a whole lot going for it even before his very entertaining trailer. The fact that it’s inspired by a real person makes it even better.
Here’s Roofman‘s official synopsis from Paramount Pictures, and yes, there’s a Toys “R” Us mention:
Based on an unbelievable true story, Roofman follows Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh, a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.
Roofman also stars Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang, and Peter Dinklage. Like we said, great cast. Blue Valentine‘s Derek Cianfrance directs with a screenplay he co-wrote with Kirt Gunn (Lovely By Surprise).
Will this film fulfill our own childhood dreams of wanting to live inside a toy store? Probably not, but that won’t stop us from enjoying someone else getting to do that. And we’ll get that chance when Roofman sneaks into theaters October 10, 2025.
