What better movie to drop a trailer during the Super Bowl Big Game than one called Project Hail Mary. The term, which takes its name from one of the big Catholic prayers (maybe like the top two) began its association with professional football with the idea that throwing a deep bomb pass to the endzone in the dwindling seconds of a game is like saying a “Hail Mary” to try not to die horribly or whatever. It’s a desperate move. So, if the sun is dying and a fatalistic plan to try to save it pops up, no name works better. Ahead of 2026’s final NFL game, we got to see the final trailer for Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling. It’s just as dazzling, wild, and fun as we’d hoped. Plus, it gives us all the feelings, as Ryan Gosling’s character, Ryland Grace, bonds with Project Hail Mary‘s adorable alien, Rocky. Take a look at the Project Hail Mary final trailer below!
In this Project Hail Mary trailer, we get a lot of what we know will be the heart of the movie: the relationship between alien, Rocky, and humanity’s last chance, Ryan Gosling’s Ryland Grace. We see the pair, meet, dance, bond, and fight for one another in this sneak peek at the movie. And we already know they are going to break our hearts.
Project Hail Mary is based on the 2021 Andy Weir book of the same name. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard (who also wrote the previous Weird adaptation, The Martian). Directors are Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who haven’t directed a movie since 22 Jump Street in 2014. They did, infamously, start the production of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but Disney let them go, replacing them with Ron Howard. The official synopsis shares: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.“
The cast of Project Hail Mary includes Gosling (also a producer on the film), Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. Oscar-winner Grieg Fraser (Dune) is the cinematographer, and Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pemberton did the score. Some very good people are involved. Plus a rock alien! I mean, what more do you need?
Project Hail Mary hits theaters March 20, 2026.
