OpenAI is working on its own social network that is like X. Even though the project is still very new, there is an internal prototype that focuses on ChatGPT’s image generation and has a social feed built in.
According to reports, CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project. It’s not clear if OpenAI wants to make the social network a different app or add it to ChatGPT.
It is still unclear if OpenAI plans to release the social network as a separate app or integrate it into ChatGPT.
This idea was first sparked by CNBC headlines that stated, “Meta plans to release standalone Meta AI app in an effort to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.” Sam Altman replied, “ok fine, maybe we’ll do a social app”
ChatGPT is in direct rivalry with Grok
Musk and Sam Altman have been competitors ever since Musk left OpenAI. However, this year has started intensely for both. In February, Musk made an unasked-for offer to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion. Altman rejected the offer, saying, “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”
ChatGPT was the most downloaded app in the world last month. But Grok has also received a great audience. Grok is different from other chatbots because it has a personality. It’s smart, has strong opinions, and seems surprisingly human. It’s meant to be sarcastic and funny, and it is not afraid to answer smart questions that most AI would avoid.
Its connection to X allows it to get real-time updates from social media. This makes its answers more up-to-date and useful than other AI models that only use old data, like ChatGPT.
In fact, one idea behind the OpenAI social prototype is to have AI help people share better content. A person working at an AI lab said, “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous […] Especially how people create viral tweets by getting it to say something stupid.”
OpenAI has been through over 35 cases in US federal court over claims of copyright violations. Many of these cases are about accusations of direct copyright infringement for making AI models from copyrighted works without permission. There are also claims that copyright management information was removed or changed, and claims that AI models made derivative works that violated copyright laws.
This is to say that it would give OpenAI its own real-time data that X and Meta already have and use to help train their AI models.
OpenAI introduces faster coding
As the week began, Sam Altman said that OpenAI had a lot of good stuff coming this week. One of them is its new GPT-4.1 family of models. GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano are the three types. OpenAI says they “excel” at following instructions and writing code.
The multimodal models can be accessed through OpenAI’s API, but not ChatGPT. They have a 1-million-token context window. This means they can read about 750,000 words at once.
OpenAI says that on coding measures like SWE-bench, the full GPT-4.1 model does better than its GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini models. It is said that GPT-4.1 mini and nano are more efficient and faster, but they are less accurate. GPT-4.1 nano is its fastest and cheapest model ever.
For every million input tokens, GPT-4.1 costs $2, and for every million output tokens, it costs $8. A million input tokens cost $0.40, and a million output tokens cost $1.60. A million input tokens cost $0.10, and a million output tokens cost $0.40/million.
As GPT-4.1 comes out, OpenAI competitors like Google and Anthropic step up their work to make more complex programming models. Popular coding tests give Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, which just came out and has a 1-million-token context window, good marks. The Anthropic Claude 3.7 Sonnet and the upgraded V3 from the Chinese AI company DeepSeek both do.
