For five decades, Saturday Night Live has ruled late night television with countless sketches and memorable moments. And it is showing no signs of slowing down or going off the air any time soon. So it’s only right that the show is getting a fresh international version to keep this franchise going. Deadline reports that Saturday Night Live, a.k.a. SNL, will get a UK version with Lorne Michaels as its executive producer.
The news about a potential UK version of SNL came out back in 2022. Since then, it has been mostly silent with negotiations and such happening in the background. This new version of the famous sketch comedy series will air on Sky starting sometime in 2026. It will have the same format as the US show. There’s no word on who will star in it but surely that information will come later this year.
I can only imagine that nearly every guest on the UK version of SNL will have worked on Doctor Who at some point in time. Can you be a British public figure and not have a tie to Doctor Who? Probably not.
Cecile Frot-Coutaz, the CEO of Sky Studios and Chief Content Officer for Sky said, “For over 50 years Saturday Night Live has held a unique position in TV and in our collective culture, reflecting and creating the global conversation all under the masterful comedic guidance of Lorne Michaels. The show has discovered and nurtured countless comedy and musical talents over the years and we are thrilled to be partnering with Lorne and the SNL team to bring an all-British version of the show to UK audiences next year – all live from London on Saturday night.”
In the meantime, we will keep the good times rolling on this side of the pond as SNL continues to delight.
