It’s really happening. What was once a limited series, but then took over the world, has now become a full-fledged three-season TV show. Yes, we’re talking about Shōgun. Shōgun season two (and probably and three) was announced in January 2025. And then in April, we learned that leads Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis would return to our screens in Shōgun season two, playing Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English pilot John Blackthorne, respectively. Now, Shōgun has revealed to us when season two will begin production and the new and old cast that will be joining Sanada and Jarvis for the ride. Here’s the latest on Shōgun season two.
Shōgun Season 2 Welcomes Back Returning Cast Members
Although we love Lord Toranaga and John Blackthorne, they are not enough to make a full show. Returning to the world of Shōgun in season two are the following familiar cast members: Fumi Nikaidô (“Ochiba”), Shinnosuke Abe (“Buntaro”), Hiroto Kanai (“Omi”), Yoriko Dôguchi (“Kiri”), Tommy Bastow (“Alvito”), Yuko Miyamoto (“Gin”), Eita Okuno (“Saeki”) and Yuka Kouri (“Kiku”).
Sadly, not among their number is Tadanobu Asano’s Yabushige. We loved Asano’s turn as Yabushige so much and would have wanted him to return in Shōgun season two. But sadly, the character met his death in season one.
Shōgun Season 2 Introduces New Cast to Its Epic World
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new season of Shōgun without new cast. Coming onto the scene in Shōgun season two are Asami Kizukawa (“Aya”), Masataka Kubota (“Hyūga”), Sho Kaneta (“Hidenobu”), Takaaki Enoki (“Lord Ito”) and Jun Kunimura (“Gōda”). Who exactly these new characters are and what their roles will be precisely remains a mystery for now.
Behind the Scenes of Shōgun Season 2
In addition to casting news, Shōgun season two has revealed that two directors season one, Hiromi Kamata (Season 1, Episode 6 “Ladies of the Willow World”) and Takeshi Fukunaga (Season 1, Episode 7, “A Stick of Time”), will direct again in season two, with Anthony Byrne (FX’s Say Nothing), Kate Herron (Loki) and Justin Marks also set to direct episodes.
The writers on Shōgun season two are Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente, and Sofie Somoroff.
Shōgun Season 2 Synopsis
We don’t know too much about the plot of Shōgun Season 2, especially since it no longer has the backbone of James Clavell’s bestselling novel to follow. But there’s what we have learned:
In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
Part two of Shōgun is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.
Shōgun Season 2 Confirms January Production Start
Shōgun season two isn’t wasting any time. One year after it was announced, the series will kick off its filming. Yes, production on Shōgun season two will begin this January. Shōgun season one is now streaming on Hulu.
