Despite great reviews, the recent animated Transformers: ONE flopped at the box office, calling the future cinematic endeavors of the Autobots and Decepticons into question. The last G.I. Joe movie, Snake Eyes, also died a quiet death at the box office. But don’t count out these iconic Hasbro brands yet. According to Deadline, Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment is joining with Hasbro Entertainment to produce Energon Universe. This will be an adult-oriented animated series based on Kirkman’s comics of the same name, which crossover Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Kirkman’s own Void Rivals creation. Lucifer’s Joe Henderson is attached as showrunner.
Apparently, the series will have vibes similar to Kirkman’s popular Invincible, which runs on Prime Video. That show has a very adult-oriented tone, especially regarding the violence. Kirkman grew up as a huge fan of Transformers and G.I. Joe, and in 2021, acquired the comic book publishing rights to both iconic Hasbro toy brands. With Energon, Kirkman created a shared universe where the Transformers and G.I. Joe characters co-exist together, along with his own creation with Lorenzo De Felici, Void Rivals. The first issue arrived in 2023, and has since become one of Hasbro’s best-selling comics ever. The property doesn’t have a streaming home yet, but they are currently shopping it to buyers.
Energon takes its name from the substance that Transformers need to survive. In this iteration of the mythology, the ongoing war between Autobots and Decepticons on the planet Cybertron spills over to Earth, which leads to the foundation of both G.I. Joe and Cobra organizations in response. This also ties into the cosmic Sacred Ring from the series Void Rivals. And even the characters from Hasbro’s M.A.S.K. toyline and cartoon series join in. The series has sold 7 million copies worldwide, and the hopes are that this animated series for adults can get both brands going again in terms of mainstream popularity. Animated series take a notoriously long time to produce, so it may be some time before we see this one.
