Warner Bros. is sending mixed signals when it comes to their longest running franchise, the Looney Tunes. They spent a boatload of money on Space Jam: A New Legacy which premiered on HBO Max in 2021. Then, despite making and finishing it, WB shelved a Coyote vs. Acme movie and only sold it to another distributor after public outcry. So you’d assume Looney Tunes weren’t a priority anymore. You know what they say about assuming. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the dubba-dubba-WB has hired Jorge R. Gutierrez to direct a Speedy Gonzales movie.

Gutierrez is a longtime animation veteran whose work as a director includes 2014’s The Book of Life and TV projects including Super Macho Fighter, Maya and the Three, and last year’s El Guapo vs. the Narco Vampires. As of now, no writer or plot details have been shared. Gutierrez himself shared the news on his Instagram along with the caption “Ándale, ándale! Arriba, arriba!” which is of course Speedy’s catchphrase.
Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in all Mexico, first appeared in a preliminary form in the 1953 Merrie Melodies short Cat-Tails for Two directed by Robert McKimson. This iteration of the character has the same gimmick but a vastly different look and certainly vocal portrayal from Mel Blanc. Two years later, Friz Freleng’s Speedy Gonzales, featuring the fully formed Speedy, won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.
In the years since, the portrayal of Gonzales has drawn criticism for its various Mexican stereotypes. Gutierrez’s work tends to focus on positive Mexican cultural elements so presumably he’ll bring that to the project. We should also note, this project is a Warner Bros. Animation movie, seemingly it won’t have much if any live-action, as both Space Jam and Coyote do. That might give Speedy a little more leeway and less c-suite scrutiny.
