Each and every year for the past eight, animation distributor GKIDS has partnered with Fathom Entertainment for Ghibli Fest. The annual series brings beloved Studio Ghibli animated films to cinemas across the country for a few screenings, both in original Japanese with subtitles and in English-dubbed formats. So if you haven’t gotten the opportunity to see Hayao Miyazaki‘s undisputed best film, 2001’s Spirited Away, you can mark your calendars. The movie will return to cinemas this October, from Oct. 18-Oct. 22.
The Oscar-winning Spirited Away follows 10-year-old Chihiro as she and her parents explore a strange abandoned village. Not long into doing so, her parents transform into massive, gluttonous pigs and Chihiro runs away to find herself at a magical bathhouse with strange spirits and demons. In order to stave off the wrath of the sorceress Yubaba, Chihiro works at the bathhouse until she can figure out how to free her parents and return to the normal world.
Ghibli Fest generally shows one film per month. So far in 2025, fans have gotten to see Kiki’s Delivery Service, The Secret World of Arrietty, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Ponyo, and most recently Howl’s Moving Castle. Some heavy hitters for sure. Definite tonal whiplash putting Isao Takahata’s heart-destroying tragedy Grave of the Fireflies between Totoro and Ponyo, arguably Miyazaki’s most lighthearted films. The fest will wrap in November with Miyazaki’s most recent film, the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron.
